Tribute

Ruth Ayres Adair, 98, of Waxahachie, Texas, passed away peacefully on February 25th into the arms of Jesus.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

Ruth was born in Los Angeles, California to Joseph and Ruth Ayres on October 29, 1921. She went to high school at University High School near UCLA and graduated in 1941. After attending Secretarial school she worked at the Douglas Aircraft Company at the beginning of the Second World War. As a young woman Ruth played in a semi pro Softball league and sang in musical shows in Hollywood. At Douglas she met William Elmer Adair of Waxahachie and they married in 1942. Shortly after the birth of their daughter, Ruthe Adair Groth, he was tragically killed in an accident, leaving Ruth a young widow.

Ruth met John Joss of Seattle in Los Angeles and married for a second time, moving to the Northwest in 1950. The couple added three more children to their family: two daughters, Jacquenette Pauline and Joeann Frances and a son, John Wayne Joss Jr. Ruth was an active homemaker and mother: she raised her children, sang in a choir called "Mothersingers," at the Methodist Church, cooked, sewed, knitted, quilted, made ceramics, canned food and was an avid camper. Her loving husband passed away in 1967, before her youngest children reached maturity.

In 1970 Ruth became reacquainted with one of Elmer Adair's brothers, Richard "Dick" Adair, married him and settled down in Waxahachie. She worked for the Lynn D. Lasswell Insurance Company for 23 years and loved being at the heart of this historic community. After 27 years together, her beloved husband, Dick, passed away in 1997.

Ruth was a member of Ferris Heights United Methodist Church and later moved her membership to First United Methodist Church. She loved music and was a member of the Choir and Sunday school classes at both churches. She joined the Waxahachie Doll Club and served as a Baylor Auxiliary "Pink Lady" for nearly  30 years. She continued to quilt, knit and sew for the rest of her life despite suffering from severe arthritis in her hands.

Preceded in death by her parents, husbands, daughter Joeann and son John, she is survived by daughters Ruthe and Jacquenette along with their husbands, five granddaughters, two grandsons, three great granddaughters and two great grandsons.

Ruth, with her bright red hair and lovely soprano voice, was a strong woman survivor who overcame many losses in life. She was loved by her family and will remain in their hearts forever.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donations may be made to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The family also wishes to extend their gratitude to Dr. Brett Thacker, Legend Oaks Healthcare and Bristol Hospice Care of Waxahachie.
