Devoted father, loving husband, dedicated pastor, and gifted musician Michael Mitchell, 51, passed away June 4th, 2021 at his home in Maypearl. Born in Gainesville, Texas on July 7, 1969 to Philip Mitchell and Jackie Adriene Yates Mitchell, Michael graduated from Gainesville High School. After a brief stint in the army, he began working on his undergraduate degree. While attending Kerrville Folk Festival in 1994, he met Carrath Metcalf at the Kerrtry Store. They were married in Robert Lee, Texas on July 22, 1995 and made their home in San Antonio, Texas. Here, Mike earned his B.A.in English Literature at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He taught English and rhetoric for a number of years, both at St. Gerard’s and Incarnate Word. In 2004, Michael was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer, undergoing both chemotherapy and two stem cell transplants. It was during this time that Michael felt called to ministry and began working on his ministerial credentials, eventually pastoring a church in Stockdale, Texas. After his cancer receded, he was accepted into Dallas Theological Seminary in 2009. He and his family moved to north Texas where he served as associate pastor at Desoto Assembly of God and completed his Master’s degree in Systematic Theology in 2014. He was accepted into the doctoral program at DTS shortly after. Michael served as an adjunct professor at Southwestern Assembly of God University in Waxahachie, Texas and also taught at the North Texas District School of Urban Ministry. Taking strength from Psalm 118:17, Michael always swore he would serve as pastor until he dropped at the pulpit. True to his word, he served as the senior pastor at Church on the Hill (formerly Desoto Assembly of God) from May 2014 to the day of his passing.

Michael is preceded in death by his mother Jackie Yates Mitchell.  He is survived by his wife Carrath Mitchell, his parents Joyce and Philip Mitchell of Flower Mound, his brothers Brad Mitchell of Era, Texas and Corey Mitchell of Gainesville, Texas, his sons Elijah Coltrane and his wife Molly and daughter Esther Mahalia of Midlothian, Texas, Isaiah Ellington of Austin, Texas and Zechariah Armstrong of Maypearl, and James Avery English of Austin, Texas
