Helen Smith

October 21, 1920 — March 2, 2020

Waxahachie

Helen Marie (Mullins) Smith, of Waxahachie, Tx., passed away in her sleep, early morning, Monday, March 2, 2020, at the age of 99 ½. Helen was born on October 21, 1920 in Forreston, Tx. To Lillie and Arnie Mullins. Helen graduated from Italy High School and went on to attend the University of South Dakota and North Texas State Teacher’s College, with a focus on Home Economics and Teaching.

In 1943, Helen married her childhood sweetheart and best friend, F.A. (Buddy) Smith. Soon after marrying, Buddy left for San Diego, CA. to serve in the Navy during WWII; and soon after, Helen joined him and did her part in the war effort by working in a factory as a timekeeper.

After the war, Helen and Buddy settled in Waxahachie and opened their own BBQ restaurant, first in the Rogers Hotel and later where the College Street Pub is now located. Later, Helen worked for Doctor W.C. Tenery at the Waxahachie Sanitarium (Hospital) until his retirement, then moving on to become the Medical Records Librarian at Kesler Hospital in Oak Cliff, Tx., where she eventually retired from.

Helen’s love for God and her family was first and foremost, with her love of baking (and chocolate) a very close second. She loved combining these and baking for church events and for family and friends. There was never a day that one could walk into her kitchen without the sights and smells of homemade cookies, cakes or pies.

Helen was a devout Christian, which was evident by how she lived her life and treated others. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. One big hug from Helen could make any bad day go away.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Lillie and Arnie Mullins; her sister, Thelma Jean Sealy; her sister-in-law, Ruth Compton; and her husband and love of her life, F.A. (Buddy) Smith. She is survived by her sister, Ida Mae Proffitt; her daughters, Joan Carless and Rebecca Short (James); her grandchildren, John Pillow (Julia), Jennifer Hawley, and David Short; her great-grandchildren, Justin Pillow, Johnathon Herron, and Cameron Pillow; and her 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Services for Helen will be held at Wayne Boze Funeral Home, located at 1826 W. Hwy. 287 Business, Waxahachie, Tx. 75165, on Saturday, March 7, 2020 and 2pm with a visitation time starting at 1pm, followed by a private burial at Forreston Cemetery.
