Don Jones

April 29, 1943 — August 7, 2019

Don Carroll Jones was born on April 29, 1943 in Greenville, MS and passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on August 7, 2019 in Dallas.  Don leaves behind his wife of 54 years Carolyn, daughter and son in law, Donna Carol Morris and John, son John Bratton Jones, all of Forney, TX.  Four grandchildren, whom he cherished, and who referred to him as “Ernie”,  Andrew Morris (Bubba) of Colorado Springs, CO., Amanda Morris (Mimi), Luke Jones and Jackson Jones all of Forney.  Sisters and brother in law, Grace Brooks of Oxford, MS., Ginny Bratton of Rolling Fork, MS, Charlotte Jones, Judy Jones and Betty Jones all of Greenville, MS., and Jerry and Ann Bratton of Hollandale, MS, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other family members.   He was preceded in death by his brothers (his partners in crime) Edward Jones, Lawrence Jones, Alan Jones and Leonard Jones. His mother and father, Lucille Presley Jones and S.L. Jones, mother and father in law, Virginia (Tootie) Bratton and J.E. Bratton.  Don and Carolyn met on the 4th of July, 1965.  They were married 3 months later on October 8, 1965, and so their story of 54 years together began.    In 1973 he received his National Board Commission and in October of 1978, he moved the family to the Dallas area to work for Kemper Insurance as an authorized inspector.  He performed inspections for 5 different nuclear plants including Wolf Creek in Kansas, Comanche Peak in Glen Rose, Vicksburg Nuclear Site and Baton Rouge Nuclear Site. He also performed vendor inspections for E I DuPont.  He ended his full time career with the State of Texas as a quality control boiler inspector/accident investigations.   Don became a member of First Baptist church of Forney on February 1, 2009 when he was baptized alongside his oldest grandson Andrew.  He was a proud granddaddy, his grandchildren were his world. The nickname Ernie came from his grandson Luke.  Luke was unable to say “granddaddy”, it came out as Ernie and stuck.  From that point on, Ernie it was!  Root beer floats after school, trips to the Mesquite airport to watch the planes take off and land, he loved his time with the grands.   He sat  in the bleachers to watch them march in the band on Friday nights, play back to back softball games on weekends and baseball games during the week.  He was there every day to pick them up from school, always arriving at least 30 minutes early “to get in the front of the line”.  He loved his desserts, so much so that in his later years he would be told, “Daddy, if you eat a good dinner, you can have your dessert”.  You can bet he cleaned his plate!  He adored his children, whom he could never say no to even though he probably should have a few times!  His wife Carolyn was his heart and completed him.  He would comment he wanted to go first, as he could never do what she did and would not be able to stay here without her. He truly, dearly loved his family and his little shuffle and slightly twisted sense of humor will be missed so very much by each of them.
