David Dickey

David was born in Jacksonville TX on November 27th 1944, the son of RC Dickey and Iris Waltrip Dickey.  He graduated from Canton High School in 1963, and then joined the Navy in 1964.  He served six honorable years, including time in defense of his country in the Vietnam War. After he returned from service, he spent nearly 50 years as an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He served in various leadership roles for the VFW Posts in Waxahachie 3894  and Lancaster 8913, including multiple tenures as Post Commander.  His involvement with the VFW led him to continue serving others, including annual participation in endeavors such as Toys for Tots, Children's Hospital and taking essential packages to the V.A. hospital for those in need.

On December 21st, 1973, David married the love of his life, Peggy Angst.  The ceremony was officiated by his father, who was the Minister of First Baptist Church in Red Oak.  He and Peggy were married for 39 years before her death in 2012. They raised three children; Dale, Rebecca, and Laura.

David spent much of his professional career as a machinist. He had a reputation as a highly skilled, dedicated worker is known to all in the community. He was a Ham Radio operator known as “The Train Wrecker” after a well-known incident that knocked out all of the lights in Red Oak for nearly a week.

David was known by all as a true man of his word.  He was high on integrity and accountability, and when he shook your hand you knew that the agreement was solid or that the work would be done.  He was a proud man who never wanted to accept gifts or offerings from anyone, rather wanting to bear his burdens and responsibilities himself. Perhaps no better example was his valiant fight – and defeat – of Throat Cancer in the 1980s.  All will see the legacy of his values live for generations, as he’s passed these down to his children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Jan and Neva, and his wife Peggy.  He is survived by four siblings -  Roger, Gay, Amy, and James; his three children, along with 7 Grandchildren and 7 Great-Grandchildren.

Services will be held at  Wayne Boze funeral home Monday, August 30th 2021 at 9am.  His loyal and unwavering service to the United States will be honored with the Navy Flag Service and a 21 Gun Salute from the VFW Honor Guard at Red Oak Cemetery immediately following services.
