William Baynard Calhoun, affectionately known to all as "Buddy," was born on November 17, 1931. A man of exceptional drive, character, and talent, Buddy attended the University of Texas at Austin on a football scholarship, where he earned a Bachelor of Science. He later went on to earn his Master’s degree from the University of North Texas. Following his college years, Buddy proudly answered the call to serve his country, spending four years in the United States Army. He peacefully passed away on July 3, 2026, at the age of 94.
Buddy was blessed with a beautiful, lifelong love story. On April 10, 1955, he married his sweetheart, Betty Jean Lagow Calhoun. Together, they shared 71 wonderful years of marriage built on devotion, partnership, and deep love. Buddy and Betty raised their three children with patience and strength, passing down the values of hard work and integrity. Buddy was an educator and an entrepreneur at heart; he spent 30 dedicated years as a school teacher with Duncanville Public Schools, while simultaneously operating his own successful real estate and home building business.
After he retired, he bought a travel trailer and a truck, and took off to enjoy life on the road with Betty. Upon returning home, Buddy started Calhoun Thoroughbreds, fulfilling a lifelong dream of raising and racing his own horses.
Well respected and deeply loved by all who knew him, Buddy left an undeniable mark on his community. Whether he was teaching in a classroom, building a home, or spending time with his family, he brought a steady, kind presence to everything he did. His legacy of hard work, service, and love will continue to guide his family for generations to come.
Buddy is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Betty Jean Calhoun; his sons, Craig Calhoun and wife Lisa, and Bret Calhoun and wife Sara; and his daughter, Cristi Juarez and husband Mike. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Shawn Calhoun; Steelman Juarez and wife Samantha; Parker Juarez and wife Jackie; and Logan Calhoun; and his great-grandchildren, Brooks Baynard Juarez, Camryn Ann Juarez, Brennan Lynn Juarez, Collins Mae Juarez, and Colbie Jean Juarez.
A funeral service to honor Buddy's life will be held on Thursday, July 9, at 11:00 a.m. at Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
