Charles Walter Shugart passed away peacefully on June 14, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born on July 21, 1947, Walter lived a life marked by kindness, humor, hard work, and devotion to those he loved. He was known for his quick wit, dry sense of humor, and ability to bring a smile to those around him.

Walter shared 57 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Ruth Anne Shugart. The two met while attending Stephen F. Austin State University (Ax ‘em Jacks), where they both earned their degrees and began a partnership that would span nearly six decades. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and lasting memories, creating a legacy that continues through the generations that follow. He and Ruth settled in Waxahachie, Texas where he worked for Flexsteel Industries, “The Suzuki Shop”, and retired as the Comptroller for Burleson’s Honey. Walter and Ruth were life-long and devoted members of Ferris Heights United Methodist Church.

A devoted husband and exceptional father, Walter worked tirelessly to provide for his family and create opportunities for future generations. He believed in the value of hard work, responsibility, and perseverance, and he instilled those values in his sons, Charles and Steven, through both his words and his example. His steady guidance, support, and sacrifices helped set his family on a path to success, a legacy that will continue for years to come.

Some of Walter's happiest moments were spent at the family's beloved cabin in the Piney Woods of East Texas, affectionately known as "Flamingo Palms." True to its name, the property was adorned with plastic flamingos that reflected Walter's playful spirit and unique sense of humor.

Walter is survived by his wife, Ruth Anne Shugart; sons, Charles Shugart and Steven Shugart; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Shugart; his cherished grandchildren, Emma, Tucker, Peyton, and Blair; sister, Cecile Lemmon; and niece and husband Jennifer and Blake Robertson along with their children Dean and Alex.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Virginia Shugart; nephew Bobby Lemmon; brother-in-law’s, Gary Otto, Gene Catoe, Doyle Watson, and Robert Lemmon; parent-in-law’s, Osborn and Betty Watson; and sister-in-law, Rhonda Watson.

Walter will be remembered for his warm heart, generous spirit, unwavering dedication to his family, and the laughter he brought to family gatherings and everyday moments. His love for the outdoors, his adventurous spirit, and his commitment to providing a strong foundation for his family leave a legacy that will endure through the many lives he touched.

Though he will be deeply missed, his family takes comfort in the memories they shared and the example of love, kindness, strength, and humor that he leaves behind.

A memorial service celebrating Walter's life will be held on June 29, 2026, at Ferris Heights United Methodist Church, 108 Center Street, Waxahachie, Texas 75165. Visitation with the family will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the service at 10:00 a.m.

A private family interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery in Alvarado, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts in Walter's honor to Ferris Heights United Methodist Church.
