Helen Scott

September 7, 1931 — January 13, 2021

Red Oak

Helen Ruth Scott, 89, of Red Oak, Texas went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, January 13, 2021.  What a glorious reunion is being held in Heaven with her pre-deceased family and friends.  Helen passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Mark Duvall in Leesburg, Virginia, where she has resided since 2016.

Helen was born September 7, 1931 in Maypearl, Texas, the daughter of the late George Andrew and Hazel Sharp Oglesby. Helen was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend who always put others above herself.  She had a generous, loving, fun and, sometimes feisty, spirit.  Helen loved to please others and was always there to lend a hand to someone in need.  Although she had suffered from Alzheimer’s for several years, even in her last weeks she was able to bypass her condition to communicate her love and appreciation to those around her.  Alzheimer’s never dampened her love and compassion for others. Her love will live on through those she taught by her example.  She will live on in our memory and hearts forever.

In 1950, Helen was married to Thomas James Scott who preceded her in death in 1984.  Helen and James were devoted to many community and church endeavors in Red Oak, Texas.  Both were active members of First United Methodist Church of Red Oak.  Upon moving to Virginia, Helen also became an associate member of Burnt Factory United Methodist Church where she attended regularly.  For over 40 years, Helen was part owner of a commercial door hardware company, Trego Industries, located in Red Oak, Texas.  Not only was she a savvy businesswoman but, she always made time to help support her daughter’s continuing education and career.  She was a fantastic caregiver, babysitter, caregiver, cook and shopper.

Helen is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Duvall, and husband Mark, of Leesburg, Virginia, two grandsons; Brian Logan, and wife, Luisa of Monument, Colorado and John Carroll, and wife Carla, of Purcellville, Virginia; and brother, Billy Joe Oglesby of Waxahachie, Texas.  Her great-grandchildren, extended family and multitude of friends will miss her dearly.  She was also preceded in death by her dear and cherished friend, Robert Treese.

A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. January 18, 2021 at Burnt Factory United Methodist Church, Stephenson, Virginia with Pastor C. Steve Melester officiating.  Due to the Pandemic, physical attendance will be limited to immediate family and church staff only.  However, the family has requested that the service be streamed so that the multitude of family and friends in all states can participate.  During these unprecedented times, your virtual attendance means so much to the family.  The recorded service can be accessed Monday evening at  A private burial will occur on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Red Oak Cemetery, Red Oak, Texas. Helen supported the church’s Lord’s Acre Sale for over 60 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Burnt Factory United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 399, Stephenson, Virginia 22656 or First United Methodist Church of Red Oak, earmarked for the 2021 Lord’s Acre Sale, P. O. Box 25, Red Oak, Texas 75154.
