Genia Elouise Denton

Genia Elouise (Sansom) Denton was born December 26, 1926 in Sweetwater, Texas. She is preceded in death by her father, James Word Sansom, her mother, Genia Jones Sansom, and her brother, James Word Sansom, Jr. Elouise died peacefully at home January 6, 2024.  

 

Elouise attended the University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics and Child Development. 

 

Elouise accepted a teaching position in the Home Economics Department at Baylor University in the summer of 1949.   While teaching at Baylor, she met her future husband, Joe D. Denton, a law school student at Baylor Law School.

 

Joe and Elouise married in 1950.  They settled in Dallas in 1961, where they raised their four children.  

 

Elouise was a member of numerous organizations, including the Oak Cliff YWCA, Dallas Bankers’ Wives, Methodist Hospital Guild, Oak Cliff Junior Fine Arts, University of Texas Exes and served on the Board of Directors of the Dallas Public Library.

 

As a breast cancer survivor, Elouise volunteered as a Red Cross Reach for Recovery mentor encouraging women who were recovering from breast cancer.

 

Elouise was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Joe D. Denton.   

 

A memorial service and celebration of life will be held Saturday, January 13 at 1 p.m. at Kessler Park United Methodist Church, 1215 Turner Ave., Dallas, TX  75208
