Derrell Monroe Tyner, age 88, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, in Waxahachie, Texas. A man of quiet strength, sharp wit, and entrepreneurial spirit, Derrell leaves behind a legacy of service, storytelling, and a deep devotion to his family.
Derrell was born in Currie, Texas on September 13, 1937, to Sydney and Lois (Rogers) Tyner. He grew up in Ennis and graduated from Ennis High School in 1956.
Mr. Tyner proudly served his country with three years of military service in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his service, he built a successful career in real estate, becoming a respected broker and the owner of Southwest Properties in Dallas. He was a member of the National Association of Realtors, Texas Board of Realtors, the first president of the Bi-Stone Board of Realtors, chairman of the Board of Realtors Political Action committee, Membership committee, and Community Services committee.
He served his community as president of the Mexia Band Boosters, coach of a Mexia Little League team, member of the Mexia Planning and Zoning Commission, and member of the Mexia Area Chamber of Commerce.
Beyond his professional success, Derrell was a man of many interests. He was an avid golfer and a gifted writer. Having authored two books, he spent much of his later years working on a third — a testament to his lifelong creativity and active mind. However, his greatest joy was found in his roles as a grandfather and great-grandfather, roles he cherished above all else.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jack Tyner and Cloyce Tyner; and one sister, Alene (Tyner) Hathcock.
Mr. Tyner is survived by his son, Greg Tyner, and wife Terri Tyner of Ennis; his grandchildren, Matt Mosley, Melissa Eckeberger and her husband Paul Eckeberger, David Tyner and his wife Donnielle Tyner, and Bradley Tyner and his wife Kelli Tyner; and his great-grandchildren, McKenzie Eckeberger, Sebastian Eckeberger and his wife Marckye Eckeberger, Joshua Eckeberger, Skylar Eckeberger, Mason Tyner, Melody Mosley, Bailey Tyner, Asher Tyner, Cooper Roark, and Erin Tyner.
