Debbie was a true Texas cowgirl through and through.
Born and raised in Ellis County, Debbie graduated from Waxahachie High School before continuing her education at Navarro College and later Tarleton State University, where she earned a degree in Agricultural Management. Agriculture, livestock, and country living were not just interests to Debbie. They were a way of life.
From an early age, she loved all things western. Whether it was watching Laredo, Gunsmoke, rodeos on The Cowboy Channel, or listening to George Strait, Debbie never strayed far from her cowboy roots. Yellow roses, wildflowers, bluebonnets, old mason jars, cast iron cookware, western wear, Indian blankets, and mesquite trees all reminded her of home.
Anyone who knew Debbie knew she never passed up good Mexican food. A chicken quesadilla was usually her first choice, and many Sunday afternoons after church were spent deciding whether the family wanted burgers and onion rings or Mexican food. More often than not, Mexican food won.
Debbie spent her life working hard and doing the things she loved. Over the years, she worked for veterinary clinics, fertilizer companies, sale barns, water districts, and manufacturing businesses throughout Ellis County. No matter where she worked, she built lasting friendships and earned the respect of those around her through her dedication, knowledge, and strong work ethic.
Her love for animals was unmatched. Throughout her life she cared for horses, cattle, dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits, sheep, and even a monkey. Horses held a special place in her heart. From her beloved horse Sandy to Johnny, Biscuit, and many others, each had a story and a place in her life. She especially loved her Longhorn steers, including Rowdy, an orphan calf she bottle fed and raised for 27 years.
Debbie also loved to read. Her bookshelves were filled with western novels and Texas history books, especially the works of Larry McMurtry. Lonesome Dove and Streets of Laredo were among her favorites.
Faith was the foundation of Debbie's life. She faithfully served her church for many years as secretary and dedicated countless hours to church activities, especially the annual Lord's Acre sale. Her faith guided her through life's blessings and hardships and remained strong until the very end.
Debbie treasured her lifelong friendships, her family, her animals, and the simple joys of country living. She was a rancher, truck driver, traveler, student, cousin, friend, and caretaker. She was strong in her life, strong in her work, and strong in her faith.
Perhaps her sister said it best:
"God bless my baby sister."
Though Debbie would quickly remind everyone that she was the baby of the family, that playful debate never ended.
Debbie leaves behind a legacy of hard work, loyalty, faith, laughter, and love. Her memory will live on in every yellow rose, every country song, every dusty arena, and every Texas sunset.
