In Loving Memory of Darell Vernon Nay

June 11, 1933 — February 24, 2026

Darell Vernon Nay, a beloved "Gentle Giant" of the Waxahachie community and a man defined by his unwavering work ethic, a strong faith in God, and a deep love for his family, passed away on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. He died as he had lived—working on his farm and ranch in Waxahachie, Texas, a testament to the strength, vitality, and grit he maintained throughout his 92 years.

Born on June 11, 1933, in the small farming community of Carrier, Oklahoma, Darell’s character was forged in the red soil of the family farm in the Dust Bowl and at the tail end of The Great Depression. It was there he learned the true values of survival, hard work, honor and integrity working daily on the family wheat farm and caring for the livestock. He grew up knowing that a man’s word and his name were his most valuable possessions—a philosophy rooted in his lifelong faith that guided every handshake and every project he ever touvhed. A proud graduate of Carrier High School, Darell’s passion for sports, particularly baseball and basketball, began on the courts and fields of his youth.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva and began his career as an educator, serving as a teacher and Assistant Principal in Oklahoma. Following his time in education, Darell enlisted in the United States Army. While stationed in San Antonio, Texas, he met the love of his life, Gladys. Following his honorable discharge, both Darell and Gladys moved to Dallas to begin their professional careers. During these years in Dallas, Darell attended Southern Methodist University (SMU) for graduate studies in Business.

After their marriage, Darell and Gladys moved south to the community of Waxahachie. It was here that they chose to raise their family and establish their own business. Specializing as an agricultural construction company and general commercial contractor, the business left an indelible mark on the region and is still operational today. It was in these years, following his military service and as he built his reputation in business, that he earned the nickname "Salty"—a reflection of his seasoned character and direct, honest nature.

Known as a "Gentle Giant," Darell was instrumental in much of the modern development in and around the City of Waxahachie. He didn’t just build structures; he built the backdrop for the lives of his neighbors. Beyond his professional achievements, Darell was known for his strong faith in God and his deep love for his family and community. He operated with the integrity of an Oklahoma farm boy and the vision of a seasoned professional, always putting the well-being of his loved ones, community and neighbors at the forefront of his work.

In his later years, Darell’s dedication never wavered. He continued to work daily at his construction business and tend to his farm, finding peace and purpose in the labor of his hands. He was a man who never truly retired, believing that every day was an opportunity to build something valuable, useful and lasting for his customers, the family, and community he adored.

Darell was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gladys, who passed away 18 years ago, as well as his parents and his only brother.

He is survived by his sons and their families:

• Troy Nay and wife Lauren, grandchildren Jared (and wife Kyra) and Alora, and great-grandson William.
• Terry Nay and wife Jamie, and grandchildren Corbin, Mason, Cora, Jackson, and Brody.

His life of grit, grace, gentleness and community-building will be felt for generations.
