Cheryl Shelkofsky Chambers, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, public servant, and volunteer, passed away on August 18, 2026. She was born in Waxahachie, Texas, on October 20, 1965, to Frank and Linda Shelkofsky.
Cheryl married the love of her life, Steve Chambers, on August 14, 1987. Together, they built a life centered around family, community, and service. Steve was her partner in countless adventures, from fishing trips to exploring Ellis County, and Cheryl treasured the life they shared.
To her children, Cheryl was the definition of a devoted mother to Justin and Stephanie. She was kind, selfless, and unwaveringly dedicated to her family. She never hesitated to give her time, energy, or anything else she could to help the people she loved. Her family knew they could always count on her.
Cheryl was a proud Cici to Allison and Emerson, and she cherished every moment she could spend with them. She took great joy in spoiling her granddaughters and making memories with them. Family was at the center of Cheryl's life, and she treasured the time she spent with those closest to her.
She also cherished her sisters, Rhonda and Gay. As often as possible, the sisters would spend Saturdays together, creating their own treasured tradition known as “Sister Saturday.” Those ordinary Saturdays became some of Cheryl's most special memories spent laughing, shopping, and simply being together.
Cheryl's commitment to serving others extended far beyond her family. She began her career with Ellis County in 1992, serving as Deputy County Treasurer and later as Assistant County Auditor before being elected County Treasurer in 2010. Representing approximately 30 years of dedicated service to the county.
For Cheryl, public service was never simply a job. It was a responsibility and a calling. She believed deeply in accountability, integrity, and doing the right thing simply because it was the right thing, even when no one was looking. She took her responsibility to the people of Ellis County seriously and approached her work with the same honesty and selflessness that defined her personal life.
Her leadership reached far beyond Ellis County. Cheryl served as a board member of the County Treasurers' Association of Texas, including Association President 2017–2018, where she devoted herself to strengthening the education, development, and support of county treasurers and elected officials across the state. In recognition of her outstanding service and leadership, she was honored as Texas County Treasurer of the Year in 2021.
Outside of her professional life, Cheryl was a dedicated volunteer at Campfire Creek and a member of the Lions Club. She believed in giving back and found meaningful ways to serve the community she loved. Whether through public service, volunteer work, friendship, or simply being there when someone needed her, Cheryl gave generously of herself.
Above all, Cheryl loved people. She loved her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her sisters, her extended family, her friends, and the community she called home. She had a remarkable ability to make service personal, to see responsibility not as an obligation, but as an opportunity to care for others.
Those preceding Cheryl in death include her parents, Frank and Linda Shelkofsky; her stepfather, Butch Nelson; her brother, Dino Martin; her father-in-law, Hubert Chambers; and her mother-in-law, Hughlane Chambers.
She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Steve Chambers; her son, Justin Chambers, and wife Jackie; daughter Stephanie Chambers; granddaughters Allison and Emerson Chambers; sisters Rhonda Johnston and husband Ricky, Gay Lynn Johson and husband Greg; sister in law Nora Brock, and niece and nephews: Brittany Luna , Luke Johnston, Cody Martin, Jake Johnston, Rex Johnson, and Max Johnson.
She will also be deeply missed by countless friends, colleagues, former colleagues, fellow volunteers, and members of the Ellis County community whose lives were touched by her kindness, integrity, and generosity. Her legacy of integrity and service will continue through the many people she mentored, encouraged, and inspired.
