Waxahachie

Bert Elaine Hastings Esselman of Waxahachie, TX, passed away July 16, 2021.  Graveside services were held July 19, 2021 at the Sardis Cemetery.

She was born October 24, 1927 in Italy, TX, to Cordie Hastings and Anna Bell Sims Hastings

As a young woman, she worked as a telegrapher for the MKT Railroad in South Texas.  She moved to Waxahachie and worked for Cowan-Langford Motor Company as a bookkeeper.  In 1948 she married Thomas Jackson (Jack) Esselman.  They were married for 45 years before his death.  Most of her time was spent as a full-time mother of her children, Michael, Steven, and Kristi.  After the children were grown, she worked for the family business, Esselman Electric Shop for 12 years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Waxahachie for more than 70 years where she held various Sunday School leadership positions.  After retiring she volunteered as a Pink Lady for the Hospital Auxiliary.

Bert was preceded in death by her parents, her husband (Feb. 27, 1994); and a son, Michael Thomas Esselman (May 8, 2009); sisters: Margarite Hastings, Elnora Turner,  Marilyn Lang,  Louise Hargrove, and a brother, Joe Hastings.

She is survived by  her son Steven Layne Esselman and wife Ellise of  Waxahachie;  daughter Kristi Gail Esselman, of Waxahachie; daughter-in-law Bonnie Esselman of Burleson; Five grandchildren: Thomas Esselman and wife Susan of New Hope; Michele Esselman and Curt Nielsen of Lewisville;  Tammy Esselman of Watauga;  Evan Esselman and wife Linda of Waxahachie; and Andrea "Andi" Mellina and husband Shane of   Waxahachie; and four great grandchildren: Asher Esselman, Ayla Esselman, Bennett  Mellina, and Blakely Mellina all of Waxahachie; and several nieces and nephews.
