Margaret O. (Odom) Martin

April 23, 1927 ~ December 16, 2019 (age 92)

Tribute

Margaret Odom Martin, aged 92, passed from her earthly life on Monday, December 16, 2019, at home in Waxahachie surrounded by her family.  Mary Margaret Odom was the youngest of four children born to Robert Sanford and Edith Spears Odom on April 23, 1927, in Venus, TX, the fourth generation of her family in Ellis County, something of which she was very proud.

When Margaret was 9, her family relocated to Harlingen, TX, where she graduated from Harlingen High School, Class of 1943.  One of her first jobs following graduation was as a receptionist for Harlingen Methodist Church, followed by the Harlingen Chamber of Commerce, where she met her first husband, Flight Officer Chuck Hedden, who was stationed at the Harlingen Army Air Field.  They were married October 12, 1945, and had one daughter, Patricia Ann.

After moving back to the DFW area, Margaret began working at First Presbyterian Church in Dallas as the business secretary.  Following that, she spent much of her professional life as a bookkeeper, working for Wolverton Air in Duncanville before moving back to Waxahachie in 1973 and taking a bookkeeping position at C.A. Wilson Company.  It was while working at Wilson’s that she became friends with Evelyn Wilson, who introduced Margaret to her brother, Raymond Martin.  Margaret and Raymond were married February 7, 1975, at First Christian Church in Waxahachie.

Margaret was a lifetime member of Beta Sigma Phi, Beta Nu Master Chapter, where she held most officer positions and also represented the chapter as Valentine Queen and Outstanding Club Woman.  She was also a past president of City Federation.  In addition to her sorority work, Margaret was a volunteer at Baylor Hospital.  She loved to play bridge and Bunco, and, many years ago, along with her husband and several other couples, started a monthly supper club that eventually evolved into a monthly game night that still meets to this day.

Margaret loved her church.  She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Waxahachie, participating in Chancel Choir, Early Risers choir, the JOY singers and the Genesis bell ringers, as well participating in United Methodist Women.  And she loved her family.  It was that love of her family that is her legacy.

Margaret was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, her parents, Robert and Edith, sister and brothers, Wilna, Charles and Frank.  Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Patricia Hernandez and her husband, (who Margaret referred to as her special son-in-law) Patrick of Waxahachie; step-daughter Deborah Martin of Alvin; grandson Charley Hamm of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, and great grandsons Noah Hamm of Apple Valley, CA and Sethan Hamm of Adelanto, CA; bonus granddaughter Coley Klug and husband, Ken and great grandchildren Brodie (US Army/Ft. Hood), Olivia, Jackson and Jameson, all of Ovilla; special niece Carol Henley and husband Ron of Kingwood, and special nephew Charles Alvin Wilson and wife Annette of Waxahachie, along with many other precious family members and friends.

The family would like to thank everyone who has reached out to them in this difficult time and to the caregivers in Margaret’s life – her doctors and nurses who treated her with kindness and respect and especially to Bristol Hospice-Pathways for their loving care.

Friends and family are encouraged to gather for a time of visitation on Friday, December 20, 2019 from 6 to 8 in the evening at Wayne Boze Funeral Home.
